“The ideal conditions for making things are created when machines, facilities and people work together to add value without generating any waste.”~ Kiichiro Toyoda. These words from the founding member of Toyota rings true even to this date and across the globe in Malaysia. Since 2021, UMW Toyota Motor has not wavered from their commitment to foster environmental awareness and promote eco-respect among secondary school students through their Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) Program which is accredited by the Ministry of Education in Malaysia and executed in public schools.
This one of a kind educational program extends beyond the classrooms as it empowers teenagers to tackle real world community problems and develop meaningful solutions that create lasting impact for their communities. M.A.D Movement is extremely proud to be the chosen partner to facilitate and manage this experience for students.
It is no small feat to engage schools, teachers and students to participate in such a hands-on program and in 2025, an astounding total of 120 teams from across Malaysia took on the challenge to join the preliminary round by submitting creative videos that highlight pressing environmental issues within their communities. 30 exceptional teams were shortlisted to journey with Toyota to tackle the environmental crisis that they identified in a sustainable and meaningful way.
The Top 30 Teams were equipped with practical tools to strategise, plan and implement sustainable solutions through a 2 Day Problem-Solving Methodology (PSM) Workshop which gives students a deep dive into Toyota’s very own meticulous 8-Step Process. This rigorous and highly informative training did not end there, as it then challenged students to practice what they learnt. Teams were made accountable for the sustainable measures in their communities as they were required to submit documentation of their milestones and evidence of their progress.
The support did not end there as each team was assigned a facilitator from UMW Toyota Motor as well as M.A.D Movement to provide dedicated guidance. After months of preparation and implementation, students showcased their completed projects during an on-site judging session, where judges from UMW Toyota Motor and M.A.D Movement evaluated each team’s approach, impact, innovation and sustainability measures.
This evaluation process resulted in the selection of the Top 15 Finalists, who advanced to the Finals held from 27 to 29 October. As part of the finale, the Top 15 teams were required to present their journey to a panel of judges as well as participate in an open exhibition. Eight secondary schools were invited to attend the exhibition, providing more students the opportunity to learn from the finalists and explore the possibilities of environmental action.
M.A.D Movement, is extremely honoured to be supporting UMW Toyota Motor in coordinating the application process, managing student attendance, facilitating student projects, conducting virtual check-ins and briefings, as well as supporting the logistics for Workshops, On-Site judging and the Finals.
The 2025 Toyota Eco Youth saw strong participation, innovative ideas, and impactful student-led initiatives. Students rated the programme 4.56 out of 5.00, indicating an exceptionally high level of satisfaction. They shared that the programme strengthened their teamwork, confidence, and time management skills.
Through the PSM methodology, students enhanced their communication, public speaking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. Many also discovered leadership qualities, developed a deeper sense of community engagement, and realised how small ideas can create meaningful impact.
Additionally, students learned the value of early planning, avoiding last-minute work, and thinking critically. These outcomes reflect the continued mission of the Toyota Eco Youth programme, which aims to nurture young environmental leaders and inspire them to take action through creativity, innovation, and sustainability.
